Why Copper Pipes Fail in Las Vegas
Copper plumbing has been the residential standard for decades. In most cities it lasts 50 years or more without major problems. Las Vegas is different. Two local factors work against copper supply lines more aggressively than in most U.S. markets.
Hard water pitting. Las Vegas water arrives from Lake Mead carrying 278–300 mg/L of calcium carbonate — classified as very hard. Over years of contact, mineral-laden water creates micro-pitting on the pipe interior. Small pits form, deepen, and eventually penetrate the pipe wall. The result is the characteristic pinhole leak: a tiny, precise perforation that can saturate drywall for weeks before it's noticed.
Chloramine corrosion. Las Vegas uses chloramines for water disinfection. Chloramines are more stable than chlorine and linger in the water longer — which means they spend more time in contact with your copper pipe. Research has linked chloramine exposure to accelerated copper corrosion, particularly in hot water lines where elevated temperature speeds the reaction.
Homes built between the 1970s and early 1990s with original copper are now at the age where these failure patterns are statistically common. A single pinhole is rarely an isolated event — it typically signals that the pipe in that section has reached the degradation threshold.
How We Fix It
The right repair depends on what we find. For an isolated failure in otherwise sound copper, a targeted spot repair — cut, couple, resolder or crimp — is efficient and correct. For a pipe run that shows multiple pinholes or widespread pitting, we replace the affected section with PEX-A. PEX-A doesn't react with Las Vegas's hard, chloramine-treated water the way copper does, which means the replacement section won't develop the same failure over the next decade.
We assess the condition of the surrounding pipe before recommending repair or replacement, and we provide flat-rate pricing before any work begins.

Signs You Have a Copper Pipe Leak
- Damp or stained drywall away from any visible plumbing fixture. A wet patch on a wall surface midway along a run — not near a faucet or valve — is a characteristic pinhole leak location.
- Water meter advancing when everything in the house is off. Shut off all fixtures and appliances, then watch the meter. Movement with everything off confirms an active leak somewhere in the supply lines.
- Green or blue-green staining around pipe fittings or at valves. Copper oxidation produces a distinctive green patina. Staining around joints or fittings can indicate a slow seep at that connection.
- Water bill increasing without a change in usage. A small but continuous pinhole leak adds up. A water bill that's risen without explanation warrants a leak check.
- A musty smell in walls or cabinets. Slow copper leaks saturate insulation and wall cavities before the moisture reaches a visible surface. Musty odor at the baseboard or under a cabinet can indicate a leak behind the wall.
Copper Pipe Leak Questions for Las Vegas Homeowners
What causes copper pipes to leak in Las Vegas specifically?
Pinhole corrosion from hard water is the dominant cause. Las Vegas water is sourced from Lake Mead and carries 278–300 mg/L of calcium carbonate along with chloramines used for disinfection. That combination is particularly corrosive to copper over time — the chloramines attack the copper oxide layer inside the pipe, and high mineral content accelerates pitting. Most copper pinhole leaks in Las Vegas appear in pipes that are 20 or more years old.
Can a copper pipe be patched, or does it need to be replaced?
For an isolated pinhole in otherwise sound copper, a targeted spot repair is appropriate — cut out the failed section, solder in a coupling and new pipe. For a pipe that has developed multiple pinholes in the same run, or copper that shows widespread pitting and corrosion, full-section replacement with PEX-A is the better call. We assess the surrounding pipe condition before recommending repair vs. replacement.
How do I know a slow leak is copper pipe and not a fitting or joint?
Fittings and solder joints can fail too, but the leak location tells the story. A wet spot on drywall midway along a wall run — away from any fitting — is usually the pipe itself. Leaks at a T or elbow are usually a failed joint. We pressure-test and inspect to confirm the source before opening anything.
How long should copper pipes last in Las Vegas?
Under ideal conditions, copper plumbing is rated for 50 years or more. In Las Vegas's hard, chloramine-treated water, the practical lifespan is shorter. Homes built in the 1970s and 1980s with original copper plumbing are now seeing the highest rate of pinhole failures. If your home has original copper and is 30-plus years old, pinhole leaks are a predictable event, not a surprise.
Will a water softener stop copper leaks?
A softener reduces the mineral load in the water, which slows the corrosion process. It won't reverse damage to pipe that's already pitting, but it will extend the remaining life and reduce the frequency of future pinhole failures. If your copper has started leaking, softening the water is a protective measure for the rest of the system — not a fix for the pipe that's already failed.
Should I replace failing copper with new copper or switch to PEX-A?
If replacing a section or doing a full repipe, PEX-A is the better choice for Las Vegas homes. It doesn't react with chloramines or hard water the way copper does, and it won't develop pinhole corrosion. New copper in Las Vegas hard water will eventually face the same corrosion problem. PEX-A eliminates that failure mode.
How much does copper pipe leak repair cost in Las Vegas?
We provide flat-rate pricing after an on-site assessment. Cost depends on the location and accessibility of the leak, whether spot repair or section replacement is the right fix, and the extent of any wall access needed. Call (725) 290-3207 to schedule.
