How Galvanized Pipe Fails in Las Vegas
Galvanized steel pipe was the residential plumbing standard before copper became widespread. The zinc coating that gives galvanized pipe its corrosion resistance doesn't last indefinitely — in aggressive water environments, it degrades and exposes the underlying steel to oxidation.
In Las Vegas, that process runs faster than in most markets. Las Vegas water is both hard (high calcium and magnesium content) and treated with chloramines — a combination that accelerates the degradation of zinc plating and attacks the exposed steel beneath it. As the pipe corrodes from the inside, rust and mineral scale accumulate on the walls. The effective interior diameter narrows.
The result is a gradual, years-long decline in water pressure and flow, eventually accompanied by rust-colored or metallic-tasting water — particularly from the hot side, where higher temperatures speed the corrosion process. By the time the symptoms are noticeable, the pipe interior is significantly compromised.
Las Vegas homes most likely to have galvanized supply lines are those built before the mid-1970s, when copper became the dominant residential material.
How We Handle It
Galvanized supply lines can't be restored — the corrosion is structural, not surface-level. We assess which sections are galvanized and their current condition, then replace the affected supply lines with PEX-A, routed through walls and the attic on a clean path. Water flow, pressure, and quality restore immediately after the work is complete.
- Full galvanized supply line assessment and replacement
- PEX-A replacement for all affected supply runs
- Drywall access and patching included
- Pressure testing before and after replacement
- Flat-rate pricing after on-site assessment

Signs Your Galvanized Pipe Needs Replacement
- Water pressure that has declined gradually over years. Scale buildup narrowing the interior of galvanized supply lines produces a slow, progressive pressure loss that's easy to dismiss until it becomes severe.
- Rust-brown or orange-tinged water, especially from hot taps. Rust flaking off the corroded interior of galvanized pipe discolors the water — most visibly when the hot water heater stirs up settled scale.
- Metallic taste or smell from supply lines. Corroding steel imparts a distinctive metallic character to the water. If cold water also has a metallic taste, the galvanized lines are significantly compromised.
- Gray magnetic pipe visible in utility spaces. If you can see the supply lines in a utility room or crawlspace and they're gray metal that a magnet sticks to, they're galvanized — and if the home is pre-1975, they should be assessed.
- Leaks at threaded joints. As galvanized fittings corrode, the threaded connections fail. Drips or seeps at threaded joints in older gray-metal pipe are a sign the system is past its service life.
Galvanized Pipe Questions for Las Vegas Homeowners
How do I know if my home has galvanized supply pipe?
Galvanized pipe is steel with a zinc coating — it looks dull gray and is magnetic (a refrigerator magnet will stick). Copper is reddish-brown or green with patina. PEX is flexible plastic. If the supply lines in your utility room or basement are gray metal pipes with threaded joints rather than soldered connections, they're likely galvanized. Las Vegas homes built before the mid-1970s are the most likely candidates.
Is galvanized pipe dangerous?
The primary concern is water quality and flow restriction, not acute safety. As galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside, rust and mineral scale build up on the interior walls, progressively narrowing the effective diameter. This produces discolored water and reduced flow. In some older systems, galvanized pipe was installed after lead pipe — if that's the case, the galvanized sections can leach trace lead that accumulated in the pipe joint interfaces. We don't make specific claims about lead levels without testing, but if your home has very old plumbing and you're concerned about water quality, testing is worth doing.
Can galvanized pipe be cleaned rather than replaced?
Not effectively. Hydro-jetting or chemical treatments can temporarily remove scale from the pipe interior, but the corrosion process continues and the scale returns. The underlying steel continues degrading. Cleaning is a temporary measure; replacement is the solution.
What do you replace galvanized with?
PEX-A for interior supply lines. It's chemically inert in Las Vegas's hard, chloramine-treated water, flexible enough to route through walls with fewer fittings, and removes the rust-and-scale failure mode entirely.
Will replacing galvanized pipe fix my water pressure?
Almost certainly yes, if the pressure loss is from restricted galvanized supply lines. Scale buildup inside galvanized pipe can reduce the interior diameter significantly — what was a 3/4-inch line can be functionally narrower after decades of accumulation. New PEX-A supply lines at the original diameter restore full flow.
How long does galvanized pipe replacement take?
A typical single-family Las Vegas home takes 2–3 days. Water is off during the workday and restored each evening. Drywall access is patched as part of the job.
How much does galvanized pipe replacement cost in Las Vegas?
Cost depends on home size, number of fixtures, and how much of the system is galvanized vs. already updated. We provide flat-rate pricing after an on-site assessment. Call (725) 290-3207 to schedule.
