How Hard Water Scale Affects Las Vegas Plumbing
Las Vegas water measures 278–300 mg/L of calcium carbonate — well into the range the EPA classifies as very hard, and among the highest levels of any major U.S. city. That mineral load doesn't sit still. It precipitates out of the water as it heats, slows, or encounters a surface. Every pipe, fitting, fixture, and appliance in the house is processing it continuously.
Inside water heaters. This is where scale damage is most severe and most predictable. Calcium precipitates out onto the tank floor and heating elements as water heats. The scale layer insulates the element from the water — the heater works harder to deliver the same temperature, energy use rises, and the element degrades faster. Las Vegas water heaters reach scale-related performance problems years earlier than the rated lifespan.
In copper supply lines. Hard water contributes to the pitting corrosion that causes copper pinhole leaks in Las Vegas. Scale deposits on the pipe interior don't just restrict flow — they change the local water chemistry in ways that accelerate copper corrosion at those points.
At fixtures and appliances. Aerators, showerheads, and spray arm orifices accumulate calcium crust. Dishwasher performance degrades. Shower glass clouds. Soap lather is reduced. These are the visible, surface-level effects of the same mineral load that's working on your pipes and water heater from the inside.
What We Address
Hard water scale presents differently depending on where it's accumulated and how far the damage has progressed. We assess what's actually happening before recommending a service path.
- Water heater sediment flush and descaling service
- Tankless water heater heat exchanger descaling
- Fixture aerator and showerhead descaling recommendation
- Supply line assessment for scale-related flow restriction
- Water softener installation recommendation for ongoing protection
- Flat-rate pricing after on-site assessment
Signs Hard Water Scale Is Affecting Your Plumbing
- White mineral crust accumulating on faucets, showerheads, and fixtures. Visible calcium buildup on fixture surfaces is the most obvious indicator — and a reliable signal that the same mineral load is working inside your pipes and appliances.
- Popping or rumbling from the water heater. Scale on the tank floor traps pockets of water that crack and pop as they heat. This is a reliable sign the tank needs a sediment flush — or is approaching end of life from scale accumulation.
- Reduced flow from showerheads and faucets despite adequate supply pressure. Clogged aerator screens and mineral-blocked showerhead orifices reduce flow at the fixture without changing supply line pressure. The fix is often as simple as descaling the fixture.
- Water heater running longer to maintain temperature. Scale insulating the heating element forces the unit to work harder. Rising energy use from the water heater is a measurable effect of scale accumulation.
- Recurring copper pinhole leaks in the home. Hard water chemistry accelerates the pitting corrosion that causes copper to develop pinholes. Multiple failures in the same system point to the water condition as much as the pipe age.
Hard Water Scale Questions for Las Vegas Homeowners
Can scale actually build up inside the supply pipes themselves?
Yes, but the rate and extent depend on pipe material. In copper supply lines, calcium scale deposits on the interior along with the pitting corrosion that hard water causes — both narrowing the pipe and weakening it. In water heater tanks, scale accumulates on the floor and heating elements. In showerheads, aerators, and narrow fittings, scale restricts flow directly. In new PEX pipe, scale deposits are minimal. The interior of galvanized pipe is the most severely affected — decades of scale buildup can significantly reduce the effective diameter.
At what point is hard water scale a plumbing problem rather than just an appliance issue?
Scale becomes a plumbing problem when it restricts water flow through supply lines, clogs fixture aerators and showerheads, or accelerates pipe corrosion to the point of failure. The transition from nuisance to structural problem happens gradually. The first signs are usually at fixtures — reduced flow, white buildup on showerheads — before interior pipe condition becomes the issue.
Does a water softener fix existing scale inside old pipes?
No. A softener treats incoming water before it reaches your plumbing, which prevents new scale from forming. It doesn't dissolve or remove scale that's already deposited inside old pipe. If your copper supply lines have significant mineral buildup and pitting, softening the water slows further accumulation but doesn't restore the pipe.
How do you remove scale from pipes and fixtures?
For fixtures and showerheads — descaling with citric acid or vinegar solutions. For water heaters — flushing and, for tankless units, heat exchanger descaling with a circulating solution. For supply pipe interiors — there's no practical cleaning method that restores seriously scaled pipe. If the supply lines are scaled to the point of flow restriction, replacement is the solution.
How hard is Las Vegas water, specifically?
Las Vegas water measures approximately 278–300 mg/L of calcium carbonate — classified as very hard by EPA standards and among the highest levels of any major U.S. city. By comparison, the EPA considers water above 180 mg/L hard. Las Vegas is well above that threshold year-round.
Does hard water affect hot water lines more than cold?
Yes. Calcium carbonate precipitates out of water more readily at elevated temperatures — that's why scale buildup is most severe inside water heaters, on heating elements, and in hot water supply lines. Cold lines are affected too, but more slowly.
How much does hard water pipe scaling service cost in Las Vegas?
Cost depends on what we're addressing — fixture descaling, water heater service, or supply line assessment and replacement if needed. We provide flat-rate pricing after an on-site assessment. Call (725) 290-3207 to schedule.
