Why High Water Pressure Damages Las Vegas Plumbing
High water pressure feels like a feature. Showers are stronger, fixtures seem more responsive. What's actually happening is that every component in your plumbing system is under continuous stress above what it's rated to handle.
The PRV's job. Every Las Vegas home connected to city water has a pressure reducing valve installed where the service line enters the house. Its function is simple: step down the municipal supply pressure — which can run well above residential safe levels — to a range appropriate for home plumbing (typically 50–70 PSI). When the PRV fails or ages past its service life, full incoming pressure reaches your fixtures.
The cumulative damage. At elevated pressure, faucet cartridges and washer seats degrade faster. Toilet fill valves run longer and wear out sooner. Water heater and appliance inlet valves are stressed continuously. The rubber supply hoses under sinks and behind washing machines — rated for a standard pressure range — are at elevated risk of failure. Most of this damage happens invisibly, over years, until something fails suddenly.
Water hammer. High-pressure systems are also prone to water hammer — the loud bang or knocking when valves close quickly. Hammer is pressure shock traveling through the supply lines. Persistent hammer is a sign the pressure is beyond what the system handles cleanly, and it causes additional stress at pipe joints and fittings.
How We Diagnose and Fix It
We start with a pressure reading at the main — before and after the PRV — to confirm the valve is the source of the problem. If the PRV is failing open, set incorrectly, or past its service life, we replace it and set the output to the appropriate residential range. Pressure testing confirms the result.

Signs Your Water Pressure May Be Too High
- Faucets or showerheads that drip shortly after being replaced. Washer and cartridge wear is accelerated by high pressure. Fixtures that fail within a year or two of replacement often do so because the pressure was never addressed.
- Banging or knocking in the pipes when a fixture closes. Water hammer — pressure shock from a quick valve closure — indicates the system is running above its comfortable operating range.
- Toilet fill valves that run unusually long or run constantly. High pressure causes fill valves to cycle harder and wear faster. A fill valve that's only a few years old and already failing is a pressure indicator.
- Supply hoses or washing machine connections that have leaked or failed. Rubber supply hoses have a pressure rating. At chronically elevated pressure, their failure timeline shortens significantly.
- The PRV is more than 8–10 years old. PRVs have a service life. An aging valve may continue delivering correct pressure for a while, but testing it proactively is far less disruptive than waiting for a failure.
Water Pressure Questions for Las Vegas Homeowners
What water pressure is considered too high?
The standard residential range is 40–80 PSI. Above 80 PSI is considered high and stresses plumbing components over time. Above 100 PSI causes accelerated wear on washers, valves, and supply line connections. A quick check with a pressure gauge on any hose bib gives you the number. If you don't have one, we test it as part of the diagnostic.
Does Las Vegas have high municipal water pressure?
The city delivers water at pressures that can exceed what residential plumbing is designed to handle comfortably. That's why a pressure reducing valve (PRV) is required on residential service connections — it steps incoming pressure down to a safe residential level. When the PRV fails or is absent, full municipal pressure reaches your fixtures.
What damage does high water pressure cause over time?
High pressure stresses every plumbing joint, valve, and appliance connection continuously. The most common results: faucet washers and cartridges wear faster and drip sooner; toilet fill valves run longer and fail earlier; water heater and appliance inlet valves develop leaks; supply hoses on washers and dishwashers are more likely to fail catastrophically. The damage is cumulative and usually silent until something fails.
What is a pressure reducing valve and where is mine?
A PRV (pressure reducing valve) reduces high incoming supply pressure to a safe residential level — typically set to 50–70 PSI. It's a bell-shaped brass fitting installed at or near the main shutoff where the service line enters the house. They typically last 8–12 years before needing replacement.
My PRV was replaced recently but pressure is still high — why?
PRVs can fail open or be set incorrectly. A new PRV that's set too high or installed with the wrong adjustment delivers high pressure just like a failed one. We test the actual downstream pressure after assessment and confirm the PRV is both functional and correctly set.
Is fluctuating pressure the same problem as high pressure?
Fluctuating pressure — normal pressure most of the time, but occasional spikes — often points to a water hammer issue or a PRV that's unstable rather than simply failed. Pressure spikes cause the same cumulative damage as chronically high pressure. Both are addressed by assessing and replacing the PRV.
How much does high water pressure repair cost in Las Vegas?
PRV replacement is a defined job with flat-rate pricing. We confirm the pressure issue and quote the repair after an on-site assessment. Call (725) 290-3207 to schedule.
High water pressure is a slow leak you haven't found yet.
A pressure test takes minutes. If the PRV is the problem, we replace it same-day and your system is back in the safe range.
