Why Faucets Drip and Lose Flow in Las Vegas
Most faucet problems come down to one thing: the internal component that stops water flow when you close the handle has worn out. In a cartridge faucet — the most common type in Las Vegas homes — that’s the cartridge itself, which contains the seals that press against the valve body to stop water. In a ball-type faucet, small rubber seats and springs are the wearing parts. In a ceramic disc faucet, the discs chip or the sealing ring degrades. The mechanism differs; the result — water getting past a seal that no longer holds — is the same.
What Las Vegas hard water does to faucets. Las Vegas water carries a high mineral load. Calcium precipitates onto internal cartridge surfaces and valve seats, roughening the sealing area over time. A cartridge that sealed cleanly for years gradually loses its ability to fully close as mineral deposits build up on the contact surfaces. The same minerals accumulate in aerator screens at the end of the spout, restricting flow even when supply pressure is adequate. Faucets in Las Vegas typically need cartridge replacement sooner than the same fixture installed in a low-mineral-content water area.
Kitchen vs. bathroom faucets. Kitchen faucets tend to see heavier use and often include a pull-out or pull-down spray head with its own hose and check valve assembly. Bathroom faucets are typically either single-handle or two-handle, with one cartridge per handle. Both types are serviceable in place for cartridge and seal replacement; both can be replaced as a unit when the body itself is damaged or the homeowner wants an upgrade.
Leaks at supply connections. A drip under the sink near the supply lines isn’t always the faucet itself — braided supply hose connections loosen over time, and shutoff valves under sinks in Las Vegas homes often haven’t been operated in years and may not fully close when needed. We assess the full picture under the sink, not just the faucet.

Signs Your Faucet Needs Repair or Replacement
- Faucet drips steadily even when fully closed. The internal cartridge or seals are worn and no longer forming a complete seal against the water path. The drip will worsen over time as the sealing surface continues to degrade.
- You have to turn the handle harder and harder to stop the drip. The cartridge is failing progressively. The extra force needed to stop the flow means the seals are worn thin — replacement is the right call before the handle becomes difficult to operate at all.
- Flow from the faucet has dropped without any change in supply pressure. Scale from Las Vegas hard water accumulates in the aerator screen and can coat the inside of the cartridge. The aerator is the first thing to check and descale. If that doesn’t resolve it, the cartridge or supply valve is the next step.
- Water pools under the sink near the supply line connections. Braided supply lines and their compression fittings loosen over time. A slow drip under the sink can go unnoticed long enough to cause cabinet floor damage. We check the supply connections as part of every faucet service call.
- Dripping comes only from the hot side of a two-handle faucet. Each handle on a two-handle faucet has its own cartridge. A drip on one side means that cartridge is failing — only the affected side needs service.
- The faucet finish is corroding, the body feels loose, or the handle wobbles. Cosmetic and structural deterioration of the faucet body itself isn’t a cartridge problem — it points to replacement. A new faucet installed over an undamaged body is a straightforward job.

Faucet Repair Questions for Las Vegas Homeowners
What causes a faucet to drip even when fully turned off?
The internal seal or cartridge that closes the water path when you turn the handle is worn. In a cartridge faucet, the cartridge seals against a seat inside the valve body — when the sealing surface degrades, water seeps past it. In a ball-type faucet, small rubber seats and springs underneath the ball are the wearing parts. In a ceramic disc faucet, the discs themselves can chip or the sealing ring degrades. The mechanism is different but the cause is the same: the component that stops the water flow is no longer sealing completely.
Las Vegas water is hard. Does that make faucets fail faster?
Yes, in two ways. Calcium scale accumulates on cartridge surfaces and valve seats over time, roughening the sealing area so the cartridge can’t fully close. Scale also builds up inside aerator screens, restricting flow without any change in supply pressure. Las Vegas faucets typically need cartridge replacement sooner than the same fixture would in a low-mineral-content water market.
My faucet flow dropped but pressure elsewhere in the house is fine. What’s wrong?
Almost always the aerator — the screen fitting at the end of the spout. Calcium from Las Vegas’s hard water accumulates in the mesh screen and the housing, reducing the effective opening. Unscrewing and soaking the aerator in a descaling solution often restores flow. If flow is still restricted after the aerator is clean, the cartridge may be partially obstructed with scale, or the supply valve under the sink is not fully open.
When is it better to replace the whole faucet rather than repair it?
When the faucet body itself is corroded or cracked, when the finish is failing and the homeowner wants a change, when replacement cartridges are no longer available for an older unit, or when repeated cartridge replacements suggest a valve body problem that isn’t cost-effective to chase. A quality replacement faucet installed correctly outlasts a patch on a deteriorated fixture.
I have a two-handle faucet that drips only on the hot side. Do both handles need to be serviced?
No — in a two-handle faucet each handle has its own cartridge or valve assembly. If the drip is only from one side, only that cartridge is failing. We’ll replace the worn side. If both are similarly aged and the faucet is worth keeping, doing both at once avoids a second call when the other side fails.
How much does faucet repair or replacement cost in Las Vegas?
We provide flat-rate pricing after assessing the faucet type and what’s needed. Cartridge replacement is a different job than a full faucet swap-out. Call (725) 290-3207 to schedule.
